{"id":458,"date":"2017-06-22T19:08:12","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T18:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulplowman.com\/blog\/?p=458"},"modified":"2023-02-05T22:50:15","modified_gmt":"2023-02-05T22:50:15","slug":"isle-of-wight-map-hidden-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulplowman.com\/stuff\/isle-of-wight-map-hidden-names\/","title":{"rendered":"Isle of Wight Map &#8211; Hidden Names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/paulplowman.com\/stuff\/wp-content\/osmap.jpg\" alt=\"Map of the Isle Of Wight\" class=\"alignright size-full\">I recently read the book <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/d\/cka\/0007351577\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Map Addict<\/a><\/i> by Mike Parker.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things he mentions in the book is that on the Ordnance Survey Landranger map of <em>The Solent &amp; Isle of Wight<\/em> (number 196), somebody has hidden a number of people&#8217;s names in amongst the random craggy lines which make up the cliffs along the southern coast of the Isle of Wight.<\/p>\n<p>Being the kind of person who likes this sort of nonsense, I decided to check it out.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->A couple of people online have mentioned these hidden names &#8211; apparently they were also featured in a BBC TV show called <em>Map Men<\/em> in 2004-5 &#8211; but nobody appears to have created images or a list of all the names. The results aren&#8217;t brilliant, so I thought about scanning an actual copy of the paper map instead.<\/p>\n<p>However, when I looked at my copy of the map, I found that most of the names are not there! Only Bill and Trev are present.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m\">\n<h3>Rob<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/stuff\/wp-content\/map-rob.png\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"m\">\n<h3>No Rob!<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/stuff\/wp-content\/map-norob.png\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now, my physical copy of the map is copyright 2006 (Edition D2). Does that mean that Streetmap are using a version of the map (the one with all the names) which is over 11 years out of date?<\/p>\n<p>I assume that Streetmap are using a newer version of the map. In fact, I&#8217;ve just had a look at the online map on the Ordnance Survey website, which I would assume is the most up-to-date version, and it has all the names on! So all the extra names must have been <em>added<\/em> to the map since 2006!<\/p>\n<p>Very strange.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this means there might be other odd stuff hidden in the OS maps? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently read the book Map Addict by Mike Parker.
